Body & Soul

August 24 ~ September 27, 2008

Artist Reception, September 4, 6-8 pm

Benham Gallery is pleased to announce Body and Soul, an exhibition by fine art photographers Nina Berman, Karin Rosenthal, and Dominic Rouse. The exceptional works of this exhibit take us from the emotive nudes of Karin Rosenthal, to the disembodied souls evident in surreal portraits by Dominic Rouse, and the palpable life running through the places and people of the images by documentary photographer Nina Berman.

With almost four decades as a fine art photographer, Karin Rosenthal brings us rich images drawn from a body / landscape motif. Her stunning photographs of nudes in water hold a psychological and dreamlike nature. Rosenthal has taught at the Art Institute of Boston and the Newton Arts Center, and currently teaches a Figure and Landscape workshop for the Cape Cod Photo Workshops. Rosenthal’s photographs are in several permanent collections, including the Boston MFA, and the International Center of Photography.

Since the early 1980s, Dominic Rouse has practiced a stylized approach to photography that challenges perspective and vision. Using multiple exposure techniques and large format cameras, Rouse creates digital monochrome compositions that deconstruct and reconstruct the human form. Dominic Rouse has exhibited and published work internationally for over twenty years. His work has received many awards, including the First Prize for the 2007 Prix de la Photographie for Paris Fine Art, and the First Prize for the 2007 Palm Springs Photography Festival.

Nina Berman’s highly praised documentary photographs bring us images from the American political and social landscape. Berman’s monograph, Purple Hearts – Back From Iraq is a collection of portraits and interviews with U.S. soldiers wounded in the war. The work includes an iconic 2006 portrait “Marine Wedding,” which shows a severely disfigured marine with his young bride on their wedding day. Nina Berman’s work has been extensively published, exhibited and collected. She is the recipient of awards from the World Press Photo Foundation, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and the Open society Institute. In addition, Benham Gallery will feature Nina Berman as one of five artists exhibited in “The Power of One” at the 2008 Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival in Seattle. This multimedia exhibit will be curated by Marita Holdaway of Benham Gallery and will focus on the impacts of individuals on global society, particularly on the themes of war, peace and the environment. Nina Berman currently lives in New York City where she is on the faculty of the International Center of Photography.
