Artist Reception & Opening, January 8, 6-8 pm & First Thursday, February 5, 2008

Benham Gallery welcomes the New Year with Placement of Place, an exhibition by fine art photographers Esther Sirotnik, R. Mac Holbert, Dan Steinhardt, and Robert Wade. The exceptional works of this exhibition draw us in with a unique view of geographically significant places. Through the use of line, angle, light and color, the artists bring us a glimpse of the familiar through strong graphic statements about the locations they explore with their cameras. Rather than offering the quintessential buildings and imagery tied to certain areas, these photographs invite us into a new way of seeing things through an evocation of feelings and a sense of place.

Seattle native, Esther Sirotnik, specializes in stunning images capturing the beauty of the ordinary found in extraordinary places. With an intuitive eye, Sirotnik brings us images from Paris, France that elicit a sense of place without the overt symbolism associated with the famous city. After four years spent building her collection of street photography in Paris, Sirotnik rewards us with a visual journey into the geometry of life in a dynamic urban setting. Sirotnik has exhibited her works in Seattle, Los Angeles, Italy and France, and recently published an image from her Paris collection on the cover of the spring 2008 issue of the internationally distributed Style and Substance Seasonal Magazine. A student of the Fine Art Photography Program at the Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle, Sirotnik also holds a Juris Doctorate from the Northwestern School of Law at Lewis & Clark College, and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Washington. From 1997-2002, she practiced as an Intellectual Property Attorney in the San Francisco Bay Area, before returning to Seattle in 2003.

Co-founder of Nash Editions, R. Mac Holbert is a pre-eminent leader in digital photography. Widely regarded as the world’s first digital printmaking studio focusing solely on photography, Nash Editions has established and international reputation for fine art photographic digital output. Holbert has printed several seminal digital fine art exhibits, and has recently begun exhibiting his own works. This is his second show at Benham Gallery. Prior to Nash Editions, Holbert was the Tour Manager for such music groups as Crosby, Stills & Nash, Paul & Mary and Carole King. He has long been active in the environmental movements of the Cousteau Society, Greenpeace, and others. Holbert has lectured extensively and conducted workshops on digital output. He is the recipient of several awards, including the 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Digital Imaging Marketing Association, and the 2000 Smithsonian Laureate for his pioneering work in digital printmaking.

With over two decades of experience in photography, Long Beach, CA fine art photographer Dan Steinhardt is recognized as a photographic imaging industry leader. Starting out in commercial photography during the 1980s, Steinhardt specialized in large format table-top product photography and was voted by American Photographer Magazine as the, “New Face in Advertising Photography.” Steinhardt translates his experience to fine art photography with an eye for dramatic lighting and high impact color. Drawing his inspiration from the painter Rene Magritte, the environmental portraitist Arnold Newman, and Farm Security Administration photographer Dorothea Lange, Steinhardt brings us visually rich works that capture the beauty in the ordinary things that are all around us. Since 2001, Steinhardt has held the position of marketing director at Epson, and prior to that held a marketing director position at Eastman Kodak Company. Steinhardt holds a bachelor’s degree with honors from Brooks Institute of Photography, and has completed additional studies in the Business Schools at Harvard University, the University of Virginia, and the University of Michigan.

Los Angeles native and Seattle-based fine art and commercial photographer Robert Wade brings us photographic themes including figure studies, man-made objects in the environment, water and portraiture. Wade describes his work as, “Capturing people, places and objects in ways that encourage the viewer to stop, look and apply his or her own experiences and references to the image.” Wade’s commercial work focuses on clients who seek a fresh and unusual visual point of view, with the added benefit of the technical assets available with digital photographic technology. Wade has lived in Seattle since 1989. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from California State University, and a Master’s in Communication from Stanford University. Wade is an active volunteer in the arts, and is the current President of the Seattle Art Museum Contemporary Art Council and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Henry Art Gallery, at the University of Washington.
